玉蘭花的英文怎麼說?

前幾天進行 "They are all well made in Taiwan" 這一課的warm-up 活動時，
課本出現揚名國際的台灣蝴蝶蘭(Moth Orchid)。

考量學生的程度後，我先教學生如何說蘭花的英文(orchid)，
頓時，這個商科班一位活潑的學生立刻聯想到生活中更常看到的玉蘭花，
進而詢問,
"老師, 那玉蘭花怎麼說呢? "

這個關於花卉名稱的問題，屬專業術語，我還得就教於谷歌大神啦!

一開始查到的答案說是"magnolia", 但是這個字我覺得有點眼熟，
這個植物似乎有拿來製成護膚產品。
用"magnolia" 這個字反查圖片，發現圖片中的花並沒有出現預期中的玉蘭花。
magnolia 一般被稱為"木蘭花"!

所以，我再用wikipedia 查詢~

發現 玉蘭花的拉丁學名是: Mitchelia x Alba  (玉蘭花是混血兒啦!)

英文名稱則有下列幾種: White Magnolia, white Michelia, Bai Yu Lan(白玉蘭),
                                         White Jade Orchid

原來小小的玉蘭花，有如此大的學問啊!

Classroom is now open

Dear all,

      Allyson's cyber English classroom is now officially open!

      This is the second teaching blog that I've launched. My first teaching blog was created with news publishing company, the United Daily News. Yet, the platform underwent some changes a few years ago. I haven't been able to update new posts on the original blog very smoothly. So, I've decided to try building my second teaching blog here.

      I plan to post some of useful English learning strategies here, to share the answers to the inquiries of my students and to share some of my teaching or learning moments for discussion.

       I hope that this blog could be of help to those who are interested in learning or teaching English.
